Sliabh Luachra Summer School 2017

Taking place in July and August 2017

The emphasis will be on the Curtin and Leahy manuscripts. These recently discovered manuscripts from the Rockchapel area date from the 18th and 19th centuries, gives us an historically important glimpse into an older layer of Sliabh Luachra music. It is one which predates the quadrille-based polkas and slides which now characterise the music of this region on the border of counties Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

The manuscripts contain a mixture of reels, jigs, hornpipes, slow airs and other interesting pieces. Also revealing of the richness of the music of the region at the time of the manuscript’s compilation are the elaborate slow airs it contains.

You can listen to some of the pieces by clicking here.
