Ceoltóirí Sliabh Luachra
Ceoltoiri Sliabh Luachra are a group of 20 talented musicians, singers, and dancers aged
between 14 and 19 years who have been trained in Bruach na Carraige, Rockchapel in 2010/2011.
Some of the tunes go back to the book of William Ballet of 1584, to the collection of
John and William Neal of 1724, to the collection of William Bunting mostly collected
at the Great Belfast harp Festival of 1793, and many of the other great collectors of the
ancient music of Ireland and to such noted musicians as Mickie Cumba Ó'Suilleabháin
from Caherdaniel Co Kerry and Eoin O'Suilleabhân from Meal Na gCor Caherciveen both
of whom have long since passed on. Nicholas McAuliffe who is one of Irelands leading
authorities on traditional Irish music researched and taught the music, Nora Buler from
Nenagh taught the singing. The teaching of the dancing was started by Catherine 0 Donnell
followed by the late Joe O'Donovan from Cork and continued by Patrick O'Dea from
Roscommon and Gerard and Padraig Devanie from Connemara. The group perform many
of the old dances going back over many generations including An Rince Mór danced at the
fair of Carman in the year 1200
Much of the music ,songs, and dances in the show are linked with the major events in the
history of Ireland from the arrival ofAn Tuaithe De Danann to Easter 1916.
